For seven years, the youth of Los Alamos have contributed effectively to post-fire recovery, reforestation, and trail building projects. Their efforts through school, church, scouts, the YMCA, and other groups have made truely valuable contributions to the comunity's forest health and recreational opportunities. This volunteer work has created young people with the skills, knowledge, and desire to continue this work as a paid workforce. VTF, in partnership with other community groups, hopes to establish youth summer job positions in environmental restoration and trail building. The benefits are widespread, from meeting community needs to assuring that our great trails and nature can be enjoyed for generations to come. Fundraising efforts have started with the goal of $20,000 to provide 10 weeks of summer employment for an eight-member crew. With an adult leader, the crew will work full time to catch up on the backlog of trail maintenance problems, improve exisiting fireline to function doubly as trails, and to prepare trails for special events.
