Rodeo-Chediski Watershed Rehabilitation Project

USDA Forest Service BAER Implementation Team

In July, 2002, the USDA Forest Service Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation Team for the half-million acre Rodeo-Chediski Fire called the Volunteer Task Force to organize a watershed stabilization project for volunteers. VTF members Craig Martin, Tessa Edelen, and John Hogan worked out of the Black Mesa Ranger District.

The scene was familiar—black sticks, roasted soil, and a thick layer of ash.
On the second day, a 1/4-inch rainstorm fell in the Buckskin Wash watershed, and sent a torrent of black through the town of Heber.
With the assistance of Jeff Walterschied and Mike Alexander from LANL, VTF organized two weekends of mulching that covered more than 200 acres.
