Ponderosa Pine Seedlings for the Cerro Grande Fire

April to October, 2002

Seedlings planted in 2002: 10,000
Total seedlings planted to date: 22,000

Working with the Los Alamos Fire Department and the Santa Fe National Forest, VTF organized 7 planting days in 2002. Volunteers started in April and continued through August, as conditions permitted. Planting was interrupted when the national forest was closed due to extreme fire danger. VTF volunteers received permission to water the the seedlings already planted by carrying fire packs filled with five gallons of water up the mountain and pumping about two cups of water to the young plants.

Students from the Los Alamos Public Schools are continuing the planting program through October.

In 2003, VTF hopes to plant riparian vegetation along several of the stream channels affected by the fire.

The planting area covered the tract between LA Mountain and 48th Street along the Perimeter Trail
